Jacques was born a Talbot but when left for Canada he took a dit or AKA name of Gervais and he became known in New France as “Jacques Talbot dit Gervais”.Technically his descendants would not be expected to use use the “dit”., but could add Gervais to their surname as “TALBOT GERVAIS” or not. In this instance we have found some descendants who have dropped the “Gervais” and some who have dropped the “Talbot” for “Gervais”.

But for convenience I have, like the PRDH, University of Montreal kept the “Talbot Gervais” as the identifying surname to differentiate them from my Gervais Ancestors.
